Trip Report: 2009 Fruita Weekend Trip

As a monsterous late-April blizzard swept into Denver, half of the group who originally signed aboard the trip fled westward, like rats from a sinking ship. I-70 near Genesee, which quickly turned into an icy skating rink blocked by stuck motorists and truckers, soon closed after our group, leaving hundreds of other drivers stranded overnight on the highway. Luckily, by Idaho Springs, the road began to improve significantly. Glorious Fruita greeted the brave riders with clear sunny skies and fantastic biking conditions. We rode Ribbon on Saturday and Horsethief Bench on Sunday before the return trip back to a then thawed out Denver. What a lucky escape!
