17 miles from Telluride, the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway is a spectacular 4x4 road connecting Ouray with Lake City. The 65-mile loop boasts two 12,000+ foot passes: Engineer and Cinnamon. All along the route the area opens onto the wildflower-filled meadows and jagged peaks of the northern San Juan mountain range. Dotting through the hostile beauty are reminants of the area's historical mining past--ghost towns, old rail beds, and tramways. The loop is routinely done as a multi-day tour with overnights in Ouray and/or Lake City.
Entrance to Alpine Loop east of Hwy 550.
