The 30-mile long Edge Loop has been honored as an "Epic" ride by IMBA. It is essentially a combination of a long ride up a gravel service road to the top of the Book Cliffs north of Fruita, followed by a fun and rapid descent through pinon pines to a dry waterfall, which must be rappelled down by rope into a dry wash. Once in the wash the trail follows the creekbed through sand and brush until it emerges from the canyon and joins the "18 Road" complex of trails. The trail is rated "difficult" due to the length, amount of climbing (1800') and the technical challenges of the descent. Some people love the Edge Loop; others loath it. Ride it and decide for yourself.
Here's the start of the climb up Coal Gulch Road--shuttle suggested.
