COLORADO TRAIL: Waterton Canyon
The beginning (or end, depending on your perspective) of the Colorado Trail at Waterton Canyon in southwest Denver is a very popular ride and, as such, can get very crowded during the weekends. From the parking lot, the trail begins as a 6-mile, mellow ride on Denver Water's dirt, service road to Strontia Springs Dam and Reservoir. The road, while boring, serves as a good warm-up and cool-down from the singletrack after the Dam. The trail climbs steeply up to the top of Russell Ridge where it forks right to the rest of the Colorado Trail all the way to Durango almost 500 miles away or left to a nice loop which'll dump you back down to the dirt road by the dam.
Huge, busy parking lot.
