Chalk Creek Pass Jeep Road
This old mining road connects the town of Garfield with Hancock and St. Elmo across Chalk Creek Pass. The 6-mile section starting in Garfield at Hwy 50 offers riders a great scenic, aerobic workout climbing 2400' to the Pass. The road climbs steeply for the first half mile then levels out for the next 3 miles. The road comes to an end, but the trail continues onward as a moderately techinical singletrack for the next 2 miles. The final half mile crosses talus fields and alpine meadows before summiting the 12,100’ pass. Riders reaching this point are rewarded with astonishing views of the Chalk Creek and Middle Fork drainages surrounded by numerous 13,000’ peaks. For the strong of heart and bike, the trail continues for many more scenic miles to the ghost towns of Hancock and St. Elmo. Incidentally, the upper five miles of this route is also part of the Continental Divide Trail.
Next to the snowmobile rental shack across the highway from Monarch Lodge.
